Contributing to the transformation of education in Côte d’Ivoire
Côte d’Ivoire has for the past 20 years been in a state of crisis, which has negatively affected all areas of society, particularly the education sector. The crisis has worsened issues of the learning crises, inclusion, lack of considering gender in education policies, and inequitable management of human resources to the detriment of girls, disabled children, and people living in rural areas.
In response to these challenges, several strategies and public policies has been put in place. In 2010 the Ivorian Network for the Promotion of Education for All (RIP-EPT) was formed. RIP-EPT, consisting of 25 civil society organisations active in education, support the important role of civil society in influencing public policies. Through this project, RIP-EPT will work to strengthen RIP-EPT's commitment to the development, implementation, and monitoring of inclusive, high quality and gender sensitive education policies.
More specifically, the project seeks to obtain three specific objectives:
- Improve the coalition's internal mechanisms for greater gender mainstreaming with a view to strengthening civil society's efforts in political engagement on behalf of disadvantaged/vulnerable groups.
- Strengthen the monitoring of education policies and other commitments with a view to contributing to the positive development of certain indicators of the 2016-2025 PES in relation to access, quality and gender.
- Consolidate learning collaboratives with a view to monitoring the implementation of national plans, the CESA, the ODD4 and the Education 2030 framework for action.
By the end of the project phase, RIP-EPT is expecting to have contributed to an increase in the school enrolment rate for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in 12 regions of the country, as well as a reduction in repetition, dropout, and exclusion rates for pupils and an increase in the integration rate for graduates of Technical Education, Vocational Training and Apprenticeship.
The project is a continuation of the previous project phase, implemented between April 2022 – December 2023, and will during the current phase consolidate the efforts and achievements already made. In order to achieve the project objectives, some key activities of the project will entail:
- Enhancing the recruitment of civil society organisations working with marginalised groups, such as women, youth, and people with disabilities.
- Organising an annual forum on inclusive teaching practices and innovations, under the leadership of organisations working with disabled people.
- 12 Regional Committees produce indicators related to the operation of literacy centres and Islamic Education Structures (SIE), school kits, human resources management, construction of school infrastructure, repetition, dropouts, and exclusion.
- Annual monitoring and evaluation reports on the implementation of activities in 12 regional committees.
- Conducting a literature review to draw up a planning table for the government's implementation of the conclusions of the EGENA and the SMTE and produce and disseminate annual reports on the implementation.
The project has been designed to ensure the longevity of the project impact, and in the end achieving the objectives will make the Ivorian education system more inclusive, accessible, effective, and gender sensitive.
A previous phase of the project was carried out between April 2022 – December 2023. The current project is part of the EOL extension phase of 2024-2026. Read more about the previous phase of the project here.
