Gender Responsive and Inclusive Education in Togo

This project from the Togolese National Coalition for Education for All (CNT/EPT) is entitled "Gender Responsive and Inclusive Education (GSIE)".

The overall objective of the project is to "contribute to making Togo's national education system more inclusive for the equitable realization of the rights of children in vulnerable situations, especially girls and children with disabilities.

Togo has a new Education Sector Plan (ESP) covering the period 2020-2030 with its key axes being: access, quality and governance. To achieve quality, which requires equitable access for all children without discrimination, the government intends to train teachers and provide them with materials and kits. Indeed, through the Education and Institutional Strengthening Project (PERI), reading and calculation books were produced and made available to students until the end of 2019.

Despite the government's willingness to make reading and arithmetic books available to students, it has been noted that reading and arithmetic books are regularly unavailable and in insufficient quantity. This situation affects the quality of learning and discourages parents from sending their children to school, especially children with disabilities.

Through this opportunity, the CNT/EPT intends to bring the government to make reading and arithmetic books available and on time to keep the most vulnerable children in school. The main targets of the project are the Ministry of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education and Handicrafts (MEPSTA), the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), the education committee of the National Assembly, local elected officials, public elementary school management committees (COGEP) and inspectors.

The actors at the central level (MEPSTA and MEF) will be led to take the decision to provide schools with textbooks; 60 staff members of 12 town halls in 6 educational regions will be strengthened to help them integrate the gender and inclusion perspective into their action plans; 60 members of 12 COGEPs in 6 educational regions will be strengthened to conduct sensitization activities. 20 inspectors will be supported in the process of reviewing their class and school monitoring grids.

1400 actors from the 7 educational regions (parents, teachers and students) will be sensitized on gender, non-violent education, inclusion and the harms of early marriage of girls and 3000 members of the communities and the coalition will mobilize for the integration of the gender and inclusion perspective in the national education plan.

The coalition will influence the education dialogue to get gender and inclusion mainstreamed into ministry planning through participation in Local Education Partners Group (LEG) meetings and through support of learning collaboratives. Also, sensitization, research, advocacy, capacity building, lobbying, and social mobilization will help achieve the targeted results for approximately 863,500 students (PSE2020-2030).
